If there's no avoiding it, then you might as well give it your all. Getting into a fight while not wanting to fight is just begging for defeat, if you ask me. And monsters will always be the bad guys, so you shouldn't feel bad about beating 'em up.
[ ... Mafuyu is still young though so he should make this advice responsible. He lifts an illustrative finger! ]
Just be sure to stay hydrated and fight safely! Bring a partner just in case you get hurt and stop when you're tired!
[ There is avoiding it, all the fights that Mafuyu gets in being ones she's willingly run headfirst into and she embraced that wholly. Their team had been split between reluctance and reckless, but everybody fought because everybody had to— she was just one of the only ones to have fun with it, making it into a game and wheedling prizes out of the Retrospec staff on her own while the city is literally being burnt to the ground and more than one person having died throughout everything that had happened.
But Yato says it's okay, as long as she has a water bottle and some bandaids. ]
...Yeah! If it's a fight, I won't ever lose! And if people don't want to fight, then I'll do it for them.
[ ... Yeah, Yato has run facefirst into all his fights too. Asking Yato for validation was probably some subconscious form of cheating. ]
... Just don't be reckless, okay? You'll make your cousin worry if you get hurt.
[ Though he has more faith in her street wisdom than her book smarts. She's always been able to wiggle her way out of any bad situation. He looks her up and down. She doesn't seem to have any noticeable injuries from these past few weeks, either... ]
Have you gotten any weird powers yet? What happened to all those weapons you texted me about?
[ She did get slammed into the ground by Noah's holy monster claw and possibly broke some ribs, but otherwise she eats well, sleeps well, heals up (too) well and looks just fine; injuries aren't anything she ever lets people know, or they'll become even more smothering. She's just fine by herself, and her personal strength is something she's always stood by, so powers and magic are things that make her frown. Is superhuman strength a power? Is being able to power through the pain of broken bones a power? Nah. It's all her. ]
Nothing like that. The weapons too, Maurice asked for them back, so we weren't allowed to keep any of them. I should've just kept them, huh? They would've been useful to have around!
[ Yato is really just looking for signs that he and Mafuyu share hallucinomemories. If she has weird powers to play with, then great -- she'll be safer when she does get into fights. But it'll be nice to know for sure what part she might have played in his other life, if any at all. Especially if there's a chance she was a shinki, like Yukine... ]
You're not enough of a terror with your fists alone? Besides, we don't need you getting sent to juvie for possessing illegal weaponry.
[ The holy brass knuckles are more of a gray area. ]
[ She has to die first before she becomes a shinki, and that's just impossible. Getting sent to juvie isn't impossible, but Mafuyu still has her hopes that it'll soon become something she doesn't have to worry about. ]
Maurice is Retrospec's postman. He's the one who sent all my stuff, and whatever you've gotten too— But hey! People don't care about you waving around a sword, right? [ because they don't see him in the first place... probably... But- ] Other people have been waving around whatever too, and people don't even notice. Because it's trying, monster-infested times, and they need people like us to protect the city, so they have to turn a blind eye, right?
That's such bs. We should be getting medals or something, not homework and bills.
[ She says that, but she wasn't thinking about that at all the entirety of last month. It was just... fun, being with people and getting hyped up about fighting a big bad together as a team, celebrating when they won, avenging each other when they didn't. It was a good end to her summer break, but now she just huffs a sigh. ]
At least when there were monsters, no one could say that fighting is a bad thing. Now all I'm going to hear at school is "Mafuyu, don't fight in class!" or "Mafuyu, don't fight in the halls!" or "Mafuyu, don't fight on the playground!"
[ That's because you're not supposed to fight in school, Mafuyu... It would be easy to chastise her over it, but it's not like Yato had a spotless record in high school either. ]
Ever thought about doing martial arts? You'd probably be killer on a sports team, too.
[ If she doesn't get thrown off the team for rulebreaking first... ]
[ Mafuyu grumbles something under her breath, kicking at the ground. ]
Martial arts is all about respect and stuff, right? [ She can tell right away that she wouldn't do well in that sort of structured learning. ] And sports teams have to meet every day after school too, and I like doing stuff when I feel like it. I was thinking of doing football tryouts just for kicks, though. You get to ram into people while getting cheered on.
[ It won't hurt her, anyway. He can't say anything for the other football players. ]
There are other fighting sports that don't care too much respect. Boxing, wrestling... ooh, how about hockey? People love when fights break out in hockey.
Yes, at first you'll struggle to get along with your teammates. As the loose cannon of the team, you'll give your peers countless headaches, but your undeniable talent will garner their reluctant respect.
Until one day, when you'll come across an opponent so powerful, he'll bring you to your knees! In the pit of despair, you'll feel like all your hard work has amounted to nothing... That is, until your teammates come to raise you up on their shoulders with their unimaginable love and support. Together with your friends, you'll beat your rival and ride home triumphant, basking in the moving epiphany that you love being in a team after all.
[ She should probably be finding some insult in those countless headaches and reluctant respect, but she's having more trouble imagining Yato's offered scenario of getting beaten by a guy and turning to other people instead of retaliating herself. ]
So basically you're saying that I suck unless other people are helping me. Rather than relying on them, wouldn't it be easier to just get better and take the rival on one-on-one? That way, it's a fair fight.
Listen up, Mafuyu! Being as strong as you can be is a good goal, but don't be an ape about it! If an axe murderer came at us right now, would we fight him one-on-one or team up on him??

You think they see us as superheroes or something? As if. You still have to pass high school, and I still have to pay rent.

Boxing and wrestling, maybe... Hockey's a team sport though. You know I don't do well in team sports. You gotta... work together, and stuff.
