[ It's the night before murder.

Whatever the Chiefs say, Yato has no intention of letting anyone kill him -- or his partner. As the door to their hut swings closed, the quiet insect chirrups and gentle rustlings of leaves in the night breeze taper into silence.

Yato immediately goes to his bed and wheels it to the door, then flips the bed, frame and all, to form a makeshift barricade. Then he moves to drag his trunk over and do the same. ]

Don't worry, Haru. I'll keep us safe!

[ He might be without his blessed vessel and effectively a human, but he still prides himself as a god of war. He'll fight the whole island if he has to!! ]

[ Haru watches him for a moment, expression mild in its concern, and then -- ]

Then I insist we take turns. We can sleep in shifts.

... Alright.

[ Even if he is a god, he gets sleepy like anyone else. There won't be much point in him keeping watch when he starts nodding off. ]

Do you know how to fight, Haru?

[ It's a touch informal, the way she lies down on her bed and stares up at the ceiling. Hopefully he won't mind. His question is answered regardless, hands folded across her stomach. ]

Sort of. I'm pretty good with an ax, but I've never fought barehanded.

[ It's good, Yato couldn't be less about formalities. He'll be staring at the door/barricade anyway, except to glance at Haru when she says things like she just did. ]

An ax?! Are you a viking?!

[courted]

[ For no real reason, she decides to be silly. Maybe it'll help keep her mind off the impending events of the night, or to distract from all the other little miseries she's sporting. ]

Yes. I'm actually the fiercest viking in all of the northlands. Can't you tell?

[ Gosh he was joking but he can't believe it's actually true!! ]

Really? That's so cool!

[ Except he does actually believe her because Haru would never speak a falsehood to him!! Also there's an alien on the island so like, why not a viking. And she did kick that coconut down like a beast before... ]

Well then, look! I made this today.

[ He draws a makeshift knife made of obsidian from his jacket, one end wrapped in torn fabric. ]

If I can't get to this, then you're free to use it. Just try not to hit bone with it, okay? It's fragile!

[ There are two things Haru could not have possibly anticipated regarding this conversation with Yato.
1) That he would take her glib comment about being a viking as truth; and
2) That his response would be to give her a knife.

What a weirdo. Haru can't help but find all this thoroughly endearing. Her smile remains. ]

I understand. Hopefully I won't need it, but if I do, I'll be sure to exercise caution.

[ And then, looking at it, ] - you made that yourself?

[ Haru is a goddamn saint. ]

Sure did! Stuff like this is a piece of cake for me. It was a pain getting to the volcano, but it was worth it!

[ Much sweat was shed this day... ]
