[ Yato shows up after work! And because things are too often suddenly awful around this city, he'll step in with with his sheathed sword in hand. He sets it by the door, pushing up the sleeves of his jacket as he moves into the apartment's stuffier space. ]
[chuuya's settled on the couch with a wine glass (listen, he didn't drink at all in august, let him live), but he gestures towards the kitchen and adds-]
You remember where everything is, yeah? If you want a drink or anything, go ahead.
[he's not quite focused on yato, though, clearly preoccupied with something.]
[ Well, if Chuuya insists... Yato moves over to the kitchen to find a beer or whatever Chuuya has that's easy and alcoholic, but not before giving Chuuya a curious glance over. Chuuya never did actually say if everything was okay, so Yato assumed something weird was going on -- like when Chuuya was stuck to the ceiling. Everything does seem to be in place, though...
Yato sits near Chuuya with his drink and gets comfortable. ]
... there's more to my ability than I thought. I remembered being able to- unleash it, basically, make it way more powerful, but... I lost control when I did. I couldn't stop myself.
[he swirls the wine in his glass, eyes fixed down on it.]
My partner was a nullifier. If he didn't get to me in time to cancel it out, it'd kill me. I don't know exactly how powerful it is-- I just know when I came out of it, I was bleeding next to a fucking crater and felt like death.
I had to trigger it myself, then, but-- fuck, I don't know if it'll be the same here. I have no idea how much control I'm gonna have, I just know it's there.
[ Yato's head tips an inch in thought, gaze steady on Chuuya. So Chuuya is alarmed about his ability -- seriously alarmed, if he had to ask Yato to come over to talk about it. With good cause. But why is Chuuya telling him in particular? What can Yato do? ]
What does it mean to be a nullifier? Did he just have to knock you out?
He could cancel out abilities. Turn it off, pretty much. Without him or someone else like him--
[chuuya hesitates, there, pausing to drain the glass before he manages to continue. it's a lot to ask of anyone who knows him, even a god, but... it has to be someone he knows. someone he can trust.]
If I ever have to activate it, or if something happens to trigger it? I need you to stop me. I don't know how many people would be able to.
[ He doesn't like the hesitation and spontaneous drinking involved with this request. If Chuuya thought there was a chance this power could be dealt with safely, if those words "stop me" were as innocent as they sounded, surely he wouldn't be acting this way. The absence from work, the preoccupation, the careful wording. It must have all stemmed from this one thing.
A numbness seeps into Yato's chest. ]
You're asking me to kill you if it comes down to it.
...yeah. Before I cause too much damage or kill anyone else.
[he finally meets yato's eyes, then, giving him a resigned look.]
If my memory's right, then- I'm dead either way, unless someone turns up who can cancel it out. And if I've got any say in it this is never gonna be a problem, but... no telling, knowing this place.
[ He looks into Chuuya's eyes. Holds Chuuya's gaze for a few silent seconds as if testing its resolve. Eventually, Yato looks away and runs a hand over his face, letting it rest over his eyes. Thinking. Absorbing. He hasn't agreed to anything yet. He has questions. ]
How will we know this ability's been triggered? What're the signs?
I- honestly, I don't know much about what it's like while it's active. It's like I was blacked out until my partner brought me back from it.
[he reaches over to the sidetable by the couch, though, pulling out a notebook and flipping to an unused page before he starts to scrawl something down.]
But I know what the trigger phrase was, so if you hear this... yeah. That's it.
[he's written it in japanese, the strokes less neat and sure than they usually are, but it's still legible. it translates to:
o grantors of dark disgrace, do not wake me again.
If he was lying, I'd have known. He said we'd destroyed enemies using it before, and... I don't remember doing it, but I don't remember thinking anything was wrong with him saying that, so it had to be true.
[chuuya shakes his head, reaches up to rub at his face; he doesn't remove his hand, though, leaving his eyes covered.]
He said using it was up to me. I told him that saying that always meant I didn't really have a choice.
[ Chuuya is serious. Yato didn't have to ask a single question to get a sense of that fact, but the gravity of Chuuya's request finally settles on him. If he weren't asking Yato, he'd be asking someone else. So if the trigger sentence is spoken, if it looks like Chuuya's powers are getting out of control, if he starts bleeding and blasting out craters, Yato should kill him. Pretty cut-and-dry.
An old memory of a monster with a hundred gaping, weeping eyes flashes through his mind. Her pain and rage burning through him, her disgust and sadness and resignation. Her wish to die, a resounding hollow in his heart. Though he was a child, he felt her torture as if it were his own.
Yato firms his jaw. Maybe this task really is best left to him. ]
... Okay. You can count on me, boss. I'll do what needs to be done.
But promise me you'll try to remember more. Any memory might help.
I- yeah, I'll try. I've been trying to remember more since I started figuring it out.
[he's just not sure what else there is to remember, if he hasn't recalled it yet. there may not be anything left in his own memories, but...]
There's someone else here who's from the same place as me. He remembers it, too. It's... just that we were enemies then, so- I'm gonna try to have someone else try to figure out what he knows. If anything comes of that, I'll let you know.
this'll be like 8/8 or 8/9

It's... about something I remembered. I didn't think it was gonna be a problem, but- I have to ask you a favor, Yato.

Of course. What is it?

Dramatic, right...?

Do you know for a fact that it'll kill you? How do we know that it won't run its course and stop right before you're spent?
[ He needs to know that it's irreversible. Personally, he doesn't care as much if other people are at risk. If Chuuya can live, then he has to live. ]

Yato. I was mafia, remember? Pretty sure I could've been the bad guy, or- fuck, maybe we both were. I don't know the whole situation. But-
Maybe we don't have to be enemies, but it makes it hard to trust him, you know?

[ But a life where Chuuya was a bad person? Nah. ]
Who is he? I'll watch what I say if I ever meet him.
