[ APPEARANCE ] Yato currently looks much like his canon self: black hair, bright blue eyes that seem to change with the intensity of his mood, Japanese background. He tends to keep his hair short, but when he's lazy about getting a haircut, he'll put it up into a little ponytail. He often wears boots and one of any number of high quality scarves/bandannas around his neck (thanks Majima and Kazuma). His tracksuit, however, has been damaged beyond repair. When given the choice, he tends to dress plainly. His body language is relaxed but confident. While expressive and emotional during everyday conversation, he tends not to betray fear in his posture under duress; he leans toward combat readiness. Due to his Master-Servant contract with Akinobu Taira (Oda Nobunaga), an array of bright red command seals are tattooed along his left forearm; these are often obscured under a sleeve. As a god from Noragami canon, Yato is effectively invisible to NPCs, as well as to some PCs. More details here.[ PERSONALITY ] An annoying, quarrelsome, fun-loving, heartfelt young man in search of happiness. Failure weighs on him heavily, but he inevitably looks toward the future, an optimist against all odds. Left alone, he lives a selfish and destructive existence. He is reckless and confrontational at one end of the spectrum and overly self-indulgent at the other. It takes the people around him to draw him out of bad habits, find balance, and foster a healthy self-respect. He cares deeply for the few who take the time to help him and would sacrifice a great deal for their sakes. For all his loudness and combativeness, he is a thoughtful person at his core. He can appreciate the little gestures as much as the big ones and shares a deep empathy with other outliers of society. A glutton for attention, he can try too hard to be liked and accepted. At worst, it can lead to him being clingy, overbearing, and and obsessive. But when he lets go of those wants, he can be surprisingly mature. At present, his personality is ruled in equal parts by his human upbringing and the reality of his presence on the Far Shore. His humanity leaves him with a longing for normalcy and meaningful connections with his peers, but he knows he can't expect a human way of life when all seem doomed to forget him at any moment. While he clings to what human relationships he can, there remains a sense of distance and otherness. His pragmatic side compels him to embrace his new life as a god... as soon as he figures out how a god is supposed to be living. ♛ Born and raised in the United States. His childhood was spent in a small-time, borderline countryside suburban town not terribly far from Recolle. ♛ His mom died giving birth to him. While Yaboku was never left wanting materially, his father seemed to find pleasure in sowing self-doubt in him and manipulating his will; physicality was a careful tool to those ends. Largely isolated and eager for his father's attention, Yaboku felt only himself to blame when he didn't seem to meet his father's standards. ♛ He was told not to speak to strangers, period. Yaboku obeyed this command without question. ♛ Homeschooled up to high school. His father provided him with a surprisingly competent education in math and sciences, and Yaboku sought to do well in his studies to impress him. ♛ With no peers to play with, Yaboku spent most of his youth engrossed in solitary activities. He enjoyed comic books, arts, and crafts, as well as outdoors exploration. ♛ Sometimes, his younger cousin on his mother's side, Mafuyu ( ![]() ♛ Attended public high school. Quiet and watchful but hesitant to throw himself into the social throng, he kept to himself for much of his freshman year. His athleticism and loner tendencies would catch the attention of a few of his delinquent peers: his first school friends. ♛ His friends gave him the nickname "Yato" from the first syllables of his first and last names. ♛ Over the course of high school, Yato saw what "normal" families were supposed to look like and slowly became confused and resentful over his own home life. He would spend as much time away from home as possible, choosing to roam the streets with his delinquent friends instead. ♛ After years of fantasizing, Yato left his father's home upon graduating high school with little more than his bicycle, his pocket knife, and his meager savings. Fearful that his father would find him, he took great pains to travel in anonymity. ♛ He lived a transient life and took any job that would have him, both clean and dirty. He prized his freedom and independence in life, but was often hungry; he had difficulty keeping employment by day, leading to desperate work by night. His best pay would come from violent undertakings; he had a talent for fighting. However, he did not enjoy that work and became frustrated and angry with himself over his inability to get by without it. ♛ Chased by an inability to commit to dangerous employers who demanded too much, Yato would move to different towns often, hoping to make a fresh start each time. He would not be met with much success until finally arriving in Recolle, a nearly crime-free haven filled with generous citizens. ♛ Works at a bar called The Inkwell under owner Chuuya Nakahara ( ![]() ♛ When he isn't at the Inkwell, Yato works as a producer for idol Anya ( ![]() ♛ Yato has two shrines: (1) Inside The Inkwell. Small but dignified, it sits unobtrusively behind the bar. (2: a, b, c) In front of Minako Arisato's ( ![]() ♛ He sits in on certain classes at Recolle University: Theatre 101 and Japanese 101. Not officially enrolled in anything. ♛ Always armed with his pocket knife, a Benchmade reverse tanto. Often armed with a katana he bought off the internet; he's named it Touki (刀器), derived simply from the Japanese character for "katana". It has held up remarkably well and is scarred from numerous nicks and blasts. The handle is wrapped with tennis racket grip to account for the bits that have been slightly blown up. Yato sharpens it himself on a water stone. Though the sword gets harder to handle with time, Yato's preternatural precision with any blade more or less makes up for its shortcomings. ♛ Previous employment: Majima's Sunshine Club (host), Mikoto's Enchanted Blossoms (florist), The Hubbub Hub Arcade (idk retail associate), The Confectionary (cupcake delivery boy). ♛ Spends some time involved in geekier activities. He draws fanart and indiscriminately fulfills requests on his art tumblr, though the asks have dropped off of late. Sometimes takes cosplay commissions. ♛ Sometimes fulfills wishes posted to the local shrines, especially with Dave on Mondays. -> In response to a wish, he looks in on Goro Akechi's mom ( ![]() [ GODHOOD ] ♛ Yato is a Japanese Shinto god of Noragami canon, one of a supposed 8 million. These gods are ubiquitous throughout the natural world, and none have absolute authority -- save perhaps for Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun. They can manifest in forms ranging from human to anthropomorph to monster. ♛ A god needs at least one follower to exist. When the last follower stops believing, the god is no longer needed and vanishes from existence. If a god is struck down, he is "replaced" or reincarnated as a new self with no memories of his prior existence. Otherwise, a god may live indefinitely; Yato in canon is roughly 1000 years old. Blows from objects in the living world are not fatal, however much they may hurt the god. Only shinki wielded by a god, ayakashi, and other gods can deal lasting damage to a god. [ SHINKI ] ♛ Shinki are a vital part of a god's existence and well-being. In exchange for a god bestowing a name upon a shinki, the shinki serves the god as a tool and moral compass. The emotions of all shinki in a god's employ are channeled to the god. If a shinki perceives that she is doing or being used for wrong, she will unconsciously "sting" the god, causing a sharp pain in the god's neck. Enough stinging from one shinki or many will cause blight to form on the god; enough blight will kill the god. ♛ When given a name, a shinki actually acquires a name in three parts: the true name (based on the kun-yomi reading of the kanji), a common name (the true name + a familial suffix), and a vessel name (based on the on-yomi reading of the kanji). When a god calls the vessel name, the shinki shall transform into a fixed vessel object and travel to the god. When a god calls the true name, the shinki shall revert from her vessel form back into her human form. ♛ The type of item a shinki manifests as in her vessel form depends on the nature of the shinki and her compatibility with her god. A shinki of strong character who matches her god well will become something useful to the god and his nature. Conversely, an ill-suited shinki will become something useless. ♛ A god's lead shinki (sometimes called a guide or guidepost) is most responsible for the god's direction in life. While a god is responsible for physically taking care of his shinki, his guidepost is responsible for suppressing the god's ara-mitama (violent spirit) and nurturing his nigi-mitama (harmonious spirit). A neglectful guidepost will naturally lead to a disastrous god, and a well-serving guidepost can turn a calamitous god into a benevolent one. The bond between a god and a shinki is often close due to its heavily dependent nature. Without a shinki, most gods are easy victims of ayakashi attacks. [ FAR SHORE, NEAR SHORE ] ♛ The Near Shore: the land of the living. It includes humans and animals, though animals can perceive beings from the Far Shore. ♛ The Far Shore: the land of the non-living. It includes gods, spirits, and ayakashi. ♛ The Near and Far Shores are not different geographical locations. Rather, they are two planes of existence. Beings of the Far Shore exist among humans but are unseen by all but the most spritually perceptive, a trait carried in the blood. ♛ Humans cannot see gods or spirits unless attention is drawn specifically to them, and soon after, the human will forget about the god or spirit's existence. The concept is that humans naturally avert their eyes from death. Therefore, beings from the Far Shore escape humans' notice, much like a background character will escape the notice of the audience. ♛ Gods and shinki live close to the boundary between Shores. Ayakashi, however, live deep into the Far Shore, making them even less noticeable to humans. ♛ Beings on the Far Shore have next to no weight, allowing them to leap great distances and perch on all manner of things without disturbing them. [ WAR ] ♛ Yato is a god of war who specializes in sharp weaponry, particularly swords. It has been remarked upon that all of his shinki are weapons. ♛ He has a natural ability to fight and a strong sense of survival. Even as a child, it appears that no human can match him with a blade. ♛ He has swift reflexes and excellent hand-eye coordination. He can cut oncoming bullets in half with a sword, even so far as a hail of them if pressed. His affinity with his hands appears to lend well to his forays into arts and crafts; he is skilled in a wide number of labor professions. ♛ He has an extraordinary ability to cut. When without a shinki, he can use mundane things like branches to cut through cloth and thin pokers to pierce mask and flesh. With certain shinki, he can even cut abstract things likes ties and memories between people. [ DIVINE POSSESSION ] ♛ Gods have the ability to possess the unconscious/sleeping bodies of humans. The god disappears into the human and takes control of the body; meanwhile, the human's sense of self disappears (except in special cases where the soul may slip out of the body). The god cannot be forced out of the body; he must leave voluntarily. ♛ While possessed, the human body appears to take on the eyes of the god. ♛ The god is able to unlock the full potential of the body, making possible amazing physical feats. However, the body is still fully human and susceptible to normal injury and death. [ TELEPORTATION (locked) ] ♛ While communicating with someone via phone (or presumably the internet?), Yato can teleport to the person on the other line instantly. He can also bring spirits with him. ♛ When in contact with one of his shrines, he can teleport to Takama-ga-hara, the dwelling of the gods. [ IC PERMISSIONS ] hugging ♛ DO IT, I love hugs and Yato will probably not mind maybe possibly depending on who you are kissing ♛ feel free! flirting ♛ sure, but know that Yato views most flirting as a game with no real intent unless propositioned outright shipping ♛ Yato as a boyfriend is a Bad Choice but hey let's talk fighting ♛ he is ready for fights so much and so am I! just keep in mind that Yato is literally a god of war so skills may be ridiculous injuring ♛ I'm usually fine with it but feel free to contact me to talk killing ♛ I'm open to it but let's definitely talk first!
